About Bitcoin HD-Wallets' derivation path notation scheme (BIP32, BIP44)

Hi there,
I'm having trouble to fully understand the derivation path notation, for example ( https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/mastebip-0044.mediawiki ):
m / 44' / 0' / 0' / 0 / 0
I have 3 primary questions:
  1. What do the ticks (apostrophes) mean? Where does this notation come from, is it common in cryptography?
  2. What is an account? (Intended business use case)
  3. Lets say I only have coins on the first and second address, when I spend the second address, where is the standardized way to put the change, first or second change address?

How connect Bitcoin HD wallet address(es)

I have a Bitcoin HD wallet, a Ledger Nano, I want to connect to Delta and track. Let's say I'm only wanting to connect a single 'account', a single BTC HD set. So far I can add each address and each change addresses to get an accurate reflection of the wallet balance. The problem is, if the wallet is quite active, there are always new addresses and change addresses, and the admin involved in adding these to delta undermines the point of connecting a wallet in the first place (as opposed to just manually adding transactions).
I'm wondering if there is any obvious solution here, like using a master public key or something like that? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I have a blank slate and a chisel...

I plan on implementing something like etherpad, but I couldn't figure out the UI bits. Now I think I want to do messaging and FB like stories... Maybe reddit like threads.
The cryptic part is end to end cryptography. I'm looking for structures to use. I plan to have the server verify signatures, but each user will use a new deterministic key(think Bitcoin HD wallet) for each msg.
To goal is for the Google Cloud VPS, that I run, should only see garbage in a hub spoke topography.
If I had to pick something to do first, it would be profile pages. What structure would a nick name, portrait, banner, or description take? Would I borrow from namecoin?

We would like to inform you that we will be phasing out long payment IDs this year. Long payment IDs are detrimental to privacy and a source of negative user experience (as well as additional support work for services). Services will have to upgrade to either integrated addresses or subaddresses. Note, however, that there is some discussion about phasing out integrated addresses as well. Therefore, services are, to avoid having to potentially perform additional work, encouraged to upgrade to subaddresses directly.
Long payment IDs will be phased out because they have several salient drawbacks. First, long payment IDs are detrimental to privacy insofar as they can potentially link the transactions of a user in case of reusage. Second, long payment IDs have to be attached separately to a transaction. This is inconsistent with conventional cryptocurrency transactions and therefore unintuitive for the user. As a result, users occasionally forget to attach the long payment ID when sending their transaction to a service and thus have to go through support to 'recover' their funds. Third, it logically follows from the previous point that long payment IDs cause additional support work for services. Fourth, only one long payment ID can be attached to a transaction. Thus, services cannot batch withdrawals of multiple users specifying a long payment ID. By contrast, subaddresses have no such restriction and withdrawals can thus all be batched.
In sum, payment IDs have serveral salient drawbacks and will therefore be phased out. Services are recommended to upgrade to subaddresses as soon as possible. Subaddresses essentially function similar to Bitcoin HD wallets and should thus be relatively straightforward to implement. Furthermore, subaddresses are managable from a resource point point of view.

How exactly do Bitcoin mobile wallets fetch balance?

I’m wondering how mobile wallets like Mycelium or Samourai Wallet actually fetch balances and transactions. Do they use some kind of publicly available APIs like blockstream.info, blockchain.com or they have dedicated private APIs? I suppose they use dedicated APIs, if that’s true is it based on some kind of open source software or this is their custom software.
I’m also curious how much data is sent to that API. Bitcoin HD wallet needs to check plenty of addressed to get total account balance. They assure that user private key never leaves his device, so do they send extended public key to their APIs?

How to send 1 bitcoin which are split into 2 change addresses

I try to implement a bitcoin HD wallet application.
Here the scenario :
A user has 0.5 bitcoin in a change address and another 0.5 bitcoin in another change address.
The user want to send 1 bitcoin to someone.
What is the right solution to implement in the wallet ?
1) do 2 transactions to the same destination address => pay 2 times miner fee
2) do 1 transaction which combine the 0.5+0.5 bitcoin to the destination address => pay 1 time miner fee
Is it possible to combine 2 amounts located in 2 different addresses in 1 and how to do that ? Any link or reference that show how to do that ?

Which Private Key should I use to sign a bitcoin transaction

I try to implement a bitcoin HD wallet application.
I want to know which private key the wallet should use to sign a transaction for sending bitcoins.
I found 2 possible answers but I cannot find the right explanation or the reason for which solution is correct.
Someone can help to bring some light ?

BIP44 path definition is : m / 44' / CoinType' / account' / change / address_index

1) Solution 1 : all bitcoin transactions can be signed with 1 unique private key. So, for example I can generate the private key at the "account" level path of BIP44 and use that unique private key to sign all the bitcoin transactions in the wallet with that unique private key.

2) Solution 2 : a bitcoin transaction can only be signed with the private key at the "address_index" level path of BIP44 : the private key should match with the public key that was used to generate the address used in the transaction.

If someone can help to explain which of the 2 solutions is correct and why.
