Same lies about Dash still floating around - Time for another crackdown

This article was caught by our spamfilter because it's hosted on a reward-for-article platform (similar to steemit). Nonetheless I will respond to it, as it recycles the same old lies about Dash many of us have grown used to and it serves as in illustration that these lies and accusations are still after 6 years regurgitated 1:1 by ignorant bystanders without a single critical thought behind them.
The article is a real mess as you will notice. The author didn't even bother to edit the question section into Dash from ZCash. Anyway, that's not the real issue. This is about the section "Dash Launch And Issuance" which I am about to respond to.
The Dash cryptocurrency has a rather controversial launch and issuance as it involved a 2-day ‘instamine’ or ‘premine’
There is a huge difference between a premine and a fastmine. Conflating the two shows the author is either ignorant and thus unqualified to talk about the subject matter or tries to mislead the reader. A premine means the public is excluded from mining, which provably never happened in Dash, thus the term is 100% inapplicable.
According to Dash’s founder, Evan Duffield, this premine was the result of a bug. However, there are many people who beg to differ.
Those who "beg to differ" are idiots plain and simple. Because we have already proven that the same thing happened 2.5 years earlier in Litecoin from which Dash originally forked off (and not from Bitcoin as the author initially claims at the beginning of the article).
To ‘resolve’ the situation, the majority of these instamined coins were sold for very low prices on exchanges. However, it is widely believed that most of these coins were simply scooped up by Evan Duffield and the Dash core team for incredibly low prices.
This is my favorite part, because it's probably the only original thought in the article, as I have never heard anyone make up something so incoherently dumb with regards to Dash's launch.
First they say, Evan mined "all the coins by himself" now suddenly he's buying coins for "incredibly low prices"?! So, which is it? Can't have it both ways. Or did he buy coins from himself?
Let's cut the crap. Is it too hard to simply admit the coins were sold on the free and open market to ANYONE willing to buy them?? Nothing was sold to "resolve" anything.
Anyone, not just Evan and the team, had the chance to buy cheap coins for under a Dollar, which was fair and square, hands down. Those who missed out crying foul today are really just trying too hard. Also Dash Core did not exist in 2014. Again the author shows his ignorance further disqualifying himself.
Duffield released Dash before its intended release date (which means the instamine that occurred can be classified as a premine).
This is a lie. It did not happen as anyone can see on the blockchain. The author is a liar.
Dash’s instamine happened because Dash was launched with a block reward of 500 coins per block before it was abruptly cut 2 days later after 2million coins were instamined.
Of course the fix would happen "abruptly" as soon as the necessary blockheight was reached, otherwise it would've gone on forever. It was a mess up and nobody denies this. The fact remains that the coins were sold for pennies as my analysis has shown. Here Evan talks about the launch himself. He clearly states that coins were spilt out too fast and he was under immense pressure to fix it asap.
Initially, Dash was only minable on Linux, which could have been intended so that fewer people would mine Dash and Duffield and Dash’s core team could dominate mining (over 90% of all computers use the Windows operating system).
Conjecture without a shred of evidence assuming ill-intent over good faith. Back in 2014 mining was still a niche hobby by nerds where Linux was the dominating operating system. Evan is a nerd who was using Linux at the time. He didn't own a Windows machine. If he did, why would he offer a reward to someone compiling a Windows binary? If he was the evil fastminer everyone accuses him of, it would be in his best interest to delay Windows mining as much as possible. The accusation holds no water.
Evan Duffield was able to temporarily mine Dash by himself for a while when the public miner wasn't working.
Lie. Lie. Lie. This never happened and the author is still a liar. I know what this alludes to and I have thoroughly debunked it as the nonsense it is.
Dash was initially meant to have a max supply of 80 million DASH, but Evan Duffield held an obscure poll where the majority of the voters voted to reduce the Dash max coin supply from 80million to 20million (which instantly made the instamined DASH worth more).
First of all the value of all coins goes up with a lower supply, not just those that were first mined (duh!). This is intellectual dishonesty, but hardly surprising considering the previous lies of the author. Second, this poll is near worthless as a historic summary as it ignores what went down in the community before: Watch this analysis by Tao of Satoshi to learn that there was major community pressure on Evan's back with endless debates on how to change the reward structure and emission rate of Dash until it was finally settled after a full 7 adjustments in both directions. The narrative that there was one evil singular supply decrease to maliciously enrich Evan is completely stupid.
All in all, Dash’s launch is shrouded in controversy, and it's clear that Evan Duffield and Dash developers benefited tremendously from how everything went down.
The only thing shrouded in mystery is why anyone would believe these false conclusions, accusations and flat out lies when the facts are readily accessible. Of course the founder of any cryptocurrency benefits the most. It's how it's supposed to be. Satoshi "benefitted tremendously" as well from launching Bitcoin. The fact that Evan was able to quit his day job and work for Dash full time was the best thing that could have ever happened to this project. Of course our detractors don't like that, because they don't want to see Dash succeed. But we did and we're still here after 6 years of ceaseless innovation. Repeating ancient lies cannot undo that.

Monumental AIOMiner Update v8.4 - Mine the most profitable currencies on 74+ Algorithms (1000+ coins) while paying 0% Fees, now with free Online Rig Monitoring for your entire farm!

Hi Everyone!

We’re excited to be able to call AIOMiner, the best miner on the planet!

First of all, thank you so much for all of your support over this past year! Your constant suggestions in Discord have helped make AIOMiner what it is today and we are endlessly grateful!
If you haven’t yet, here are some quick links to get involved with AIOMiner:

Humble Beginnings

If you’re not familiar with AIOMiner, we were born right here on /gpumining. Almost exactly one year ago, xixspiderxix became frustrated with the lack of functionality, ugliness, and the high difficulty required to get started with the already existing miners. Originally, he was just going to make it for himself to enhance his own mining experience, but others started asking for access to the software, suggesting new features, and helping him improve. So, he opened it up to the public for free and AIOMiner was born. And to this day, we maintain our promise that mining with AIOMiner will always be free. You can read more about it here, but let’s get to the good stuff!

What’s New in AIOMiner?

We now have remote rig monitoring and control through our website! We’ve just enabled the AIOMiner application to connect to the AIOMiner website through an API and fixed some bugs. If you’ve never used AIOMiner before, here are some of the features you can expect on the software side of things:

The biggest part of the update is a full rebuild of AIOMiner.com. We're bringing you remote control of your rigs via the AIOMiner website so you can stop paying for services, like Teamviewer, and manage all of your rigs from anywhere you have an internet connection!

Here's what you can expect from AIOMiner.com:
Whew! That's a lot, but believe it or not... we're just getting started! We still have plenty planned to maximize your rig efficiency, control, and profitability.

All of my favorite miners?

If not all of them, then certainly a good chunk of your favorites and we make sure they are updated daily!

Q: How many cryptocurrencies does that cover?
A: ¯\(ツ)/¯ We stopped counting when we reached 1,000.

Of course, but don't take it from us! Here's a 3rd party analysis on the software:

What's Free Hash Friday?

Every week we put on an event called Free Hash Friday, and don’t call the DEA because we're not giving away weed! Maybe Canada can help you with that, but here's the general rundown for Free Hash Friday:
The AIOMiner team sends out a tweet every week with directions in an image, such as this one.
Follow the directions in the tweet where it says "To Win" with the arrows. Once you've completed those three steps, your twitter handle will be inputted into a spreadsheet (that is shared with the public) and you'll be assigned a number in the order that you're inputted.
You have until 8pm US Pacific Time (GMT -7) to enter. At 8pm, the spreadsheet will be updated one final time and the drawing will begin immediately in the AIOMiner discord channel.
You'll notice on the spreadsheet that you have a number next to your twitter handle. We have a bender bot that is able to generate a random number given the upper and lower limit. If your number is the randomly generated number, you win!
Typically we pair with a coin, as you can see, who puts up some to giveaway and we have multiple winners. If we don't have a coin to give away, The AIOMiner team will simply start mining on behalf of the winner for 24 hours and mine any gpu-mineable coin of their choice.
And that's pretty much it! So, follow our twitter and be on the lookout for the next Free Hash Friday!

What else should I know about AIOMiner?

We are fully committed to keeping mining free for everyone, but it does cost some money to keep the servers up and running. So, we're planning on releasing some "premium" features in the near future that will take the mining experience to the next level. Until December 1st, we will allow users to donate/purchase a lifetime premium account. With this account you will gain access to AIOMiner and all of the premium features that we release as well as any future product we make for free. This is only for a limited time, so if you're in the mining game for the long haul, it is definitely worth it. After December 1st, we will open up the premium features on a membership/monthly subscription basis. So, get it while it's hot!

Other than that, enjoy the software, enjoy the giveaways and come participate in the community:

Thank you again to everyone who has helped make AIOMiner what it is today!

Happy Mining,
-The AIOMiner Team
Edit: When releasing the new website, Google's Crawler flagged us as experiencing a hostile takeover and as a result, you may get a message warning of malicious content. We checked everything and there is no malware or malicious software on aiominer.com. We are actively working with Google to get this resolved as quickly as we can!

The stable coin with 52x upside in the next 4 - 6 months - BAY coin

I have spent A LOT of time researching BitBay over the past month or so. Few people kknow about this coin but it's actually one of the older altcoins in the space. Longevity is EXTREMELY important in this space cases in point BitShares, BlackCoin, digibyte, doge etc.. Once thought to potentially one day rival Bitcoin was, more or less, abandoned around 2015. What happened? The industry took off in 2017 and those who kept working hard that had similar momentum circa 2015, were paid off exponentially. Cases in point: DarkCoin (rebranded to DASH and had and still continues development), Monero, LiteCoin, Ethereum etc. etc. BitBay has been just as active as the LiteCoins and DASH's from that time period and this info is ascertainable by studying their Reddit and BitcoinTalk thread extensively. No gaps of a month or multi-month in info. Team growth the team has apparently grown from a few to nearly 2 dozen full time team members.
So okay there's an active dedicated team, but what about the dev and the core fundamentals of project?
The dev David Zimbeck is thought to be a top 20 dev in crypto (CoinGecko) and top 200 by commit volume (CryptoMiso) yet the marketcap ranks them currently at 228. Their should be somewhat of a convergence over time moving all 3 numbers more to an average. This is a metric I've used to identify value buy criteria since mid-2017 and there's no reason it should continue to be relevant.
Project fundamentals: Bitbay has several wallets, one employing a free trade market powered by BitHalo which is a legacy project that provides a mechanism to trade and interact in a trustless manner. The real value is in the dynamic peg that's been in development since late 2016 and set to unroll live on exchanges in the coming months. What's so important about this peg? The peg uses a voting system to constrict and expand the circulating supply of coins, which in turn affects price due to supply/demand. The peg is now active in their cold wallet system and the only hold up has been the need for at least one public exchange to enact this functionality on their exchange. Well from some snooping around I've found out they are in negotiations with exchange BTC-Alpha to enact their. Bittrex apparently wanted 25 bitcoin and that's okay and dandy but I understand shopping that around a bit to find a better rate. If the functionality is active on at least one exchange than arbitrage should fill in the gaps on the others. Worse case scenario, upside $.50 and project has trouble tying exactly to $1 but finds an equilibrium and peg somewhere below. Best case scenario fluctuation between $.95 and $1.05 which is thought to be more or less standard for stable coins. MAKR boasts it stays at a dollar and that's great but I'm not interested in BAY because if their stability. I'm interested in BAY because of the extreme upside. I believe economics are utilized far too little in cryptocurrency exchange & development. I believe that math is a trader or investors best friend in cryptocurrency still next to insider info and if you're not in the who's-who circle in crypto than legitimate insider info is extremely rare and hard to come by I imagine. I took time to write about this because I believe adoption will help move the project along faster and perhaps also help other exchanges adopt their protocol at a reasonable rate.
Current price of BAY now = $.0198, projection by mid-2019 $.44 - $1.05 and yes there's a wide margin of error in the price prediction but that's a quality problem when my worse case scenario is still 20x gain. Happy trading and I hope someone enjoyed this :)

Cryptocurrencies then and now

I first got interested in cryptocurrencies during the last bubble in late 2013. I bought in to the hype, bought some coins for cash, started trading, made some profit, made some losses, and ended up disillusioned when the bubble had finally popped and I was in the red. I put up a few sell orders and just waited until it would either die for good or come back alive like it has done now.
But what I saw then is repeating itself now, although in a slightly different shape. Back then people would create coins with new features such as proof of stake, new hashing algorithms that would be ASIC proof, some of them actually created coins that had some real life use like Monero and Darkcoin, or Dash as it's called now. But most of them were shitcoins only made for pump and dump purposes.
The new craze is ethereum based coins. Everyone and their uncle are making ICOs with the new best platform for a new revolutionary pointless purpose that makes no sense. Just like the shitcoins of 2013/2014 had pointless features that sounded cool but were pure fluff to make people horny enough to lose their minds and buy in to the hype so the creator could cash out a hefty bitcoin profit, leaving the bagholders wondering what the hell just happened. It's repeating itself this time too. I see people acting in the same nutty way that they did back then. Is this coin good? What should I invest in? What's the best coin and why is it $hit€oin? When will $shit€oin reach the moon? Quick, everyone buy this €rap€oin, it's going to the moon!
And so on, the trollbox is live and thriving everywhere you turn. Some are honestly asking, others are shilling, some are bots or fake accounts replying and saying they love the €oin because it has a revolutionary but pointless feature that everyone will never care about. You can also compare it to the Dot-com bubble where companies were started, venture capitalists poured their millions into ideas that sounded good on paper but no one knew how to do. But the hype was real, just look at where we are today, the internet is bigger than anyone could believe back then.
I think crypto currencies are the future just like the internet turned out to be, but it's the wild wild west right now. And don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for state regulation, it's inevitable either way, but I'd rather have it like this, decentralized, unpredictable, exciting and fascinating. But just remember that those of you who are just getting in to this, you are repeating the same mistakes that I and many others did in 2013/2014. You are the new cows that the whales are milking, you are the naive ones who're trying to make a quick buck by buying shitcoins, believing in ICOs and so on. Some of you will get it right, many out of pure luck, and a select few are able to see past the noise of the scams, ponzi schemes and outright frauds. I'm not saying I'm one of them, absolutely not, I just know that the previous bubble had the same pattern, but this time more people are aware and more cash is flowing in.
Don't take advice from Reddit. You can't trust anyone here. Assume that everything you read is a scam. The chance of it being legit is minuscule, I just refreshed coinmarketcap.com to copy/paste the number of listed coins, it was 837 before I refreshed and 840 after I refreshed. Do you see my point here? How many new coins are created per month? How many of the 840 listed coins are useful today? 5? 10? 20? 50? It's hard to define what useful is, but the vast majority of them are absolute trash.
Don't be a sheep, don't trust what a stranger online said about a coin, don't trust blogs, websites and youtubers who talk about the next big €oin that will make you fly on your personal NASA built rocket to the moon once you've staked 50 of them for a month.
But that's not to say that you shouldn't gamble, that's what we're here for, right? But don't trust their promises of some new magical properties that will revolutionize how dairy farmers trade the tons of methane that their cows produce. And yes, cows produce methane, but no, there's no coin that's trying to capitalize on that market. Yet? How about naming it ƒartcoin? I claim 10% of the premine if someone creates it. You heard it here first people.
If you've made it this far, keep in mind that the smaller coins that increase in value by e.g 200% in two weeks time most likely have no significant market cap, so if you try to sell a couple of bitcoins worth of coins, you might tank the price, so smaller coins are useless for any significant sums of money. But they're perfect for gambling purposes. Just remember that they're just that, shitcoins that you should get rid of as soon as possible. And don't take my advice, make an informed decision, I might be trying to fuck you over ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[Very long, very serious] Development summary week ending 18th April 2014

When I got my first full time job, I used to try implementing requests from everyone as they came in, and for a while people really loved that I listened to their requests. Over time, however, things started to go wrong. I’d apply a change someone asked for, and in doing so would break something elsewhere in the code, in some subtle way that was missed in short-term testing. I’d fix that second bug and reveal a third. I’d fix that just in time for a new request to come in, and the process repeat. This led to the term “Bug whack-a-mole”, wherein I was spending time mostly fixing bugs introduced to live systems through rushing through earlier bug fixes.
So this week, we’ve had a lot of people asking about changes to proof-of-work, especially X11, or even moving to proof of stake, primarily in an attempt to address risk of a 51% attack. A 51% attack is where one actor (person, group, organisation, whatever) gains control of enough resources to be able to create their own blockchain, isolated from the main blockchain, at a rate at least as quickly as the main blockchain is being created. They can then spend Dogecoins on the main blockchain, before releasing their fake blockchain; if their fake blockchain is longer than the existing blockchain, nodes will switch to the new blockchain (as they would when repairing a fork), and essentially the spent Dogecoin on the main blockchain are reversed and can be spent again. This is mostly of consequence to exchanges and payment processors (such as Moolah), who are most likely to end up holding the loss from the double-spend.
The concern about a 51% attack stems from a couple of weeks ago now, when Wafflepool was around 50% of the network hashrate (mining power). It’s still high (at the time of wring about 32GH/s out of almost 74GH/s, or about 43%), but it is diminishing as a proportion.
Lets talk about proof of stake first, as this one’s simpler. Proof of stake has been suggested as a way of avoiding the risk of Wafflepool having control of too many mining resources by itself, by changing from securing the blockchain through computational resources (work), to using number of Dogecoin held. The theory is that those with most Dogecoins have most to lose, and will act in their own interests. Major examples of proof of stake coins include Peercoin, Mintcoin and more recently Blackcoin.
However, this essentially means we take control from Wafflepool, and hand it to Cryptsy (who are considered most likely to be the holder of some of the huge Dogecoin wallets out there). I by no means expect either organisation to attempt a 51% attack, but hopefully it’s clear that simply switching risks isn’t actually improving things. I’ve also had significant concerns raised from the merchant/payment processor community about potential impact of proof of stake, and that it may encourage hoarding (as coins are awarded for holding coins, rather than for mining). The price instability of Mintcoin and Blackcoin (and that Peercoin appears to only avoid this through very high transaction fees to keep the entire network inert) does not encourage confidence, either. For now, proof of stake remains something we’re keeping in mind, primarily in case price does not react as anticipated to mining reward decreases over time, but certainly we’re not eager to rush into such a change.
Before I get into a discussion on proof of work, let me summarise this quickly; right now, uncertainty about changes is holding back our community from adopting ASICs. It’s high risk to spend hundreds, thousands or in some cases significantly more on ASIC hardware which could be left useless if we move. Those who have already purchased ASICs to support the Dogecoin hashrate would most likely have to mine Litecoin to recover sunk costs, if we did move. ASICs are virtually inevitable, and in our assessment we are better off pushing for rapid adoption, rather than expending resources delaying a problem which will re-occur later.
At the time of writing the development team has no plans to change proof of work algorithm outside of the eventuality of a major security break to Scrypt. We are focusing on mitigation approaches in case of a 51% attack, and adoption of the coin as the most sustainable approaches to dealing with this risk.
The X11 algorithm has been proposed as an alternative proof of work algorithm. X11, for those unaware, was introduced with Darkcoin. It’s a combination of 11 different SHA-3 candidate algorithms, using multiple rounds of hashing. The main advantage championed for Darkcoin is that current implementations run cooler on GPU hardware. Beyond that, there’s a lot of confusion over what it does and does not do. As I’m neither an algorithms or electronics specialist, I recruited a colleague who previously worked on the CERN computing grid to assist, and the following is primarily his analysis. A full technical report is coming for anyone who really likes detail, this is just a summary:
A lot of people presume X11 is ASIC resistant; it’s not. Candidate algorithms for SHA-3 were assessed on a number of criteria, including simplicity to implement in hardware. All 11 algorithms have been implemented in FPGA hardware, and several in ASIC hardware already. The use of multiple algorithms does significantly complicate ASIC development, as it means the resulting chip would likely be extremely large. This has consequences for production, as the area of a chip is the main determining factor for likelihood of an error in the chip.
The short version being that while yes it would take significant resources to make an efficient ASIC for X11, for a long time Scrypt was considered infeasible to adapt to ASICs. As stated earlier, any move would most likely be nothing more than an extremely expensive and risky delaying manoeuvre. ASIC efficiency would also depend heavily on ability to optimise the combination of the algorithms; a naive implementation would run at around the rate of the slowest hashing algorithm, however if any common elements could be found amongst the algorithms, it may be that this could be improved upon significantly
There are also significant areas of concern with regards to X11. The “thermal efficiency” is most likely a result of the algorithm being a poor fit for GPU hardware. This means that GPU mining is closer to CPU mining (the X11 Wiki article suggests a ratio of 3:1 for GPU/CPU mining performance), however it also means that if a way of was found to improve performance there could be significantly faster software miners, leading to an ASIC-like edge without any of the hardware development costs. The component algorithms are all relatively new, and several were rejected during the SHA-3 competition for security concerns (see http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/ST/hash/sha-3/Round2/documents/Round2_Report_NISTIR_7764.pdf for full details). Security criteria for SHA-3 algorithms was also focused on ability to generate collisions, rather than on producing hashes with specific criteria (such as number of leading 0s, which is how proof of work is usually assessed).
X11 is a fascinating algorithm for new coins, however I would consider it exceptionally high risk for any existing coin to adopt.
Beyond algorithm analysis, this week has been mostly about testing 1.7. Last weekend Patrick raised the issue that we had been incorrectly running the automated tests, which had led to several automated test failures being missed earlier. This led to other tasks being dropped as we quickly reworked the tests to match Dogecoin parameters instead of Bitcoin. So far, all tests have passed successfully once updated to match Dogecoin, however this work continues. On the bright side, it turns out we have a lot more automated tests than we realised, which is very useful for later development.
The source code repository for Dogecoin now also uses Travis CI, which sanity-checks patches submitted to the project, to help us catch any potential problems earlier, thanks to Tazz for leading the charge on that. This is particularly important as of course we’re developing on different platforms (Windows, OS X, Linux) and what works on one, may not work on others. Over time, this should be a significant time saver for the developers. For anyone wanting to help push Dogecoin forward, right now the most productive thing to be doing is testing either Dogecoin, or helping Bitcoin Core test pull requests. Feel free to drop by our Freenode channel for guidance on getting started with either.
Right now, I’m working on the full technical report on X11, and will then be back working on the payment protocol for Dogecoin. I’ve approached a few virus scanning software companies about offering their products for Dogecoin, with so far no response, but will update you all if I hear more.
Lastly, the next halvening (mining reward halving) is currently expected late on the 27th or early on the 28th, both times GMT. Given that it was initially expected on the 25th, we’re obviously seeing some slippage in estimates, and a total off the top of my head guess would be that we’ll see it around 0500 GMT on the 28th at this rate. I have taken the 28th off from the day job, and will be around both before and after in case of any problems (love you guys, not getting up at 5am to check on the blockchain, though!)

Monumental AIOMiner Update v8.4 - Mine RVN while paying 0% Fees to us, now with free Online Rig Monitoring for your entire farm!

If you’re not familiar with AIOMiner, we were born right here on Reddit(/gpumining).

Is it safe?

Of course, but don't take it from us! Here's a 3rd party analysis on the software:
https://www.hybrid-analysis.com/sample/e8f518e55783a853659938ed1c25f441acf5c8cf2e7730ce3135f2dd231759b2?environmentId=120

The Strange Birth & History of Monero, Part II: BitMonero

--YOU CAN READ THIS IN SPANISH HERE--
When i first knew about Monero i was hungry of information, and when i found the americanpegasus post about "The Strange Birth & History of Monero" i loved it. I looked for a second part for a while but as there was no trace of it i did my own investigations. Now i've decided it could be a good idea to paste the results here with the same format as americanpegasus did, to help new users looking for info about the "strange birth" of Monero.
Bitmonero - a new coin based on CryptoNote technology
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=563821.0
Notable comments in this thread:
-1: " Important: this is not a Bytecoin relaunch or not a Bytecoin replacement but a Bytecoin fork. Bytecoin has its own long history, community and stakeholders we don't know much about. I respect them and their decisions even if I don't understand them now. An intention to relaunch coin is always harmfull for everybody involved. Fork is a right way to contribute to community in case you don't agree with decisions already made. - Why did I make fork? - Because there is a number of technical and marketing issues I wanted to do differently. And also because I like ideas and technology and I want it to succeed. I did an announcement ASAP while a lot of details aren't still defined because the earlier it is announced the more people will be able to join. Details will appear as soon as they will be defined and decided.
Here are details that are already defined and I don't plan to change this:
  1. New coin will use Bytecoin(BCN)/CryptoNote code base.
  2. New coin is started from scratch (i.e. from genesis block).
  3. Emission schedule has a flatter curve (close to Bitcoin's original curve).
  4. Bitmonero - BMR (monero /esperanto/ = coin)
  5. Block target = 60 seconds"

-11: “I honestly don't see the advantage of bringing the block time down to 1 minute. You're ultimately looking at increasing orphan blocks and decreasing hash power, and all you get is a feature that looks great on paper but has little purpose. I wouldn't mess with it. Apparently the BCN devs wanted 5-10 minute block times but settled on 2 minutes after lengthy disputes. Their decision is explained in more detail here: https://forum.cryptonote.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=20”

-15: ” Block target isn't only about transaction speed.
It also influences the chance to get block in solomining […] Solo mining gives decentralization.
[…]
From another point of view faster block are smaller (less transactions per block). Small blocks are easier to propagate through network.”

-25: “There are very good reasons for having a fork instead. With BCN we have a coin that refused to show itself for 2 years and has been 80% mined. Why would the markets accept that? Crypto distribution is absurdly bad […] But this [BCN] is taking it to a whole new level. […]Don't underestimate "instamining" stigma - it annihilated Quark and continues to plague DRK
[…]
A fresh start pre-announced start gives a known market history, a fairer and longer distribution, and active development with feedback.
That said, I'm disappointed in what this thread turned out to be. We should've had discussion on the name and the parameters and other things and yet thankful_for_today is nowhere to be seen 4 days from the supposed launch.”

This coin had no discussion behind it. It was pointed that the block time is too fast beyond the solo mining phase. It was kept without offering reasons. It was pointed out that the name should be voted on. Nope, and a bizarre name resulted.
Perhaps the biggest reason to fork is that it was mined for 2 years without making itself available to the other 99.9999999% of the internet on the clearweb. Yet, we wouldn't be much better if we did a launch without a GUI client and a website. Instead, we were 1 hour from launch without a Windows client, which is actually a step backwards from BCN itself (they released an easy-to-use package with a batch file for nontechnical users). We need (1) an accessible release with (2) proper marketing (including a different name). Right now this fork doesn't have much of a reason to exist, IMO. There's no reason to release it now and work on these things later, either. All we'd be doing is unfairly mining it ahead of everyone else”

-341: “CryptoNote has relatively good privacy for transmitting values throughout the network (ring signatures, stealth addressing) while not compromising things like being able to detect inflation over the network. In ZeroCash, you can only prove that coins have been generated, not the amount that was generated, so any bugs within the system will go undetected. This would have been a huge problem for Bitcoin, as there was a well known bug involving integer overflow that allowed you to generate 2 billion coins.
Note that zero knowledge proofs are used in the ring signature method by ByteCoin/BitMonero, too (see section 4.4 of the whitepaper). Obfuscation of signature linkability is much more advanced than that used in DarkCoin, and you need to read the whitepaper to truly appreciate it.
CryptoNote also has support for multisig built in, despite the much more limited scripting language as compared to Bitcoin (see Section 6.3 of the CryptoNote 2.0 whitepaper). This is important for the implementation of decentralized marketplaces like DarkMarket that use multisig to enable the blockchain to be an escrow.”

-487: “Actually, several attempts were made behind the scenes and TFT's continued demand was full admin rights over the Monero repo. Now, what could that be useful for when tacotime already offered push/pull rights? It's certainly not about contributing code - push/pull offers the right to do that without interference or permission. This is basically a repeating pattern of shutting out everyone else, which is ironically what caused him to lose the project in the first place. The tone of that post makes his level of maturity obvious for everyone to see.
I might also point out that his contribution to date consists of 10 or so lines of code changed in a header file (to clone BCN). Then a bug 'fix' that actually allowed the chain to be attacked later (now fixed). This was followed by his disappearance. Disproportionate visibility indeed.”
(https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=563821.msg7387658#msg7387658) [eizh makes clear they tried to make a deal with TFT]
This is basically everything worth reading in this thread. I’ve extracted the most important posts in the whole thread, from first to last page. TFT, Bitmonero and its community are key in the birth of Monero.
These are the main conclussions:
  • BitMonero has a reason to exist. But to justify its existence it doesn’t need just reasons, but also a dedicated team and a participative community.
  • Thankful_for_today definitely it is not a sociable leader. His posts are scarce, every few days, and he can’t keep up to date with a nascent community really dedicated
  • TFT is desperate to launch BitMonero, probably to be the first Bytecoin fork and have the “first mover” advantage. He is even about to launch without Windows client.
  • Due to the rush, TFT has induced a few bugs. The most important one the emission curve.
  • Bytecoin starts to have some traction, and TFT keeps ignoring community suggestions, so the community has now doubts of BMR future. NoodleDoodle, eizh, David Latapie, Tacotime and smooth among others lead a split, firstly just to change the name and re-publishing the announcement thread, but they will eventually hard-split.
I have already ready a summary of the MRO topic that has a short life of not even 2 days but still has A LOT of interesting info about how the team is being built and what are their opinions on several topics. May i remember you that by then Monero had 1 minute blocks and an emission curve that would have created 86% of the tokens in 2 years. In the next post (will only make it public if i see there's any interest) we will see how and when the team adressed the problems with the emission curve, and when was the miner optimized to take away the probably voluntary obfuscations the code had.

Monumental AIOMiner Update v8.4 - Mine CLO while paying 0% Fees to us, now with free Online Rig Monitoring for your entire farm!

If you’re not familiar with AIOMiner, we were born right here on Reddit(/gpumining).

Monumental AIOMiner Update v8.4 - Mine GoByte while paying 0% Fees to us, now with free Online Rig Monitoring for your entire farm!

If you’re not familiar with AIOMiner, we were born right here on Reddit(/gpumining).
