If Bitcoin usage and blocksize increase, then mining would simply migrate from 4 conglomerates in China (and Luke-Jr's slow internet =) to the top cities worldwide with Gigabit broadban - and price and volume would go way up. So how would this be "bad" for Bitcoin as a whole??

Top 24 Cities Having Fastest Download/Upload Speeds in 2014
The 2014 Cost of Connectivity report, which was produced between July 2014 and September 2014, says the top 24 cities having the fastest download/upload speeds in terms of Gigabytes per second (Gbps), equivalent to 1,000 Megabytes per second (Mbps), are as ranked in the above titled chart and listed below:
1 Gbps:
(0.5 Gbps upload speeds) ^
(0.3 Gbps upload speeds) ^
(~0 Gbps upload speeds) ^
0.5 Gbps:
0.35 Gbps:
0.24 Gbps:
0.2 Gbps:
0.152 Gbps:
(~0 Gbps upload speeds) ^
Would mining still be "decentralized" enough if it simply spread out to these cities?
The only danger I could think of would be a few weeks where ASICs would frantically get shipped from locations with slow internet to locations with fast internet.
But mining would go on. Miners are always gonna mine.
Our discourse needs to take into consideration the following possibilities:
(1) The current concentration of mining power among a mere 4 mining conglomerates in China may be a by-product of the current mining parameters themselves - ie:
  • the availability of ASICs,
  • cheap electricity in China,
  • the arbitrary, artifificial 1 MB max block size (a temporary cap intended to fight spam - which now might actually help spammers)
  • slow internet in and out of China (across the Great Firewall?)
(2) Every different combination of these peramaters may favor some geographic regions more over others in terms of mining
Proposition:
It is not the responsibility of Bitcoin to worry about favoring some geographic locations for mining over others.
It is not the responsibility of Bitcoin to worry about favoring existing, incumbent miners over new, future miners (possibly in different locations).
Bitcoin's only responsibility is to favor its Users - by supporting increasing volume and value.
If Bitcoin's need for speed sets off a global internet bandwidth arms race (as countries discover that bandwidth = money), then that would be a nice side-benefit.

I think during this wild roller-coaster price ride we can all use something to laugh about. I present to you, "the first and best altcoin ever - Tonal Bitcoin" (Luke-Jr's words). Cue jokes about bitcoin-bong... ;)

Market Analysis on May 7, 2020: The halving will be fulfilled, BTC is in high volatility, pay attention to the risk of decline

Market Analysis on May 7, 2020: The halving will be fulfilled, BTC is in high volatility, pay attention to the risk of decline
[Today's Hot Tips]
1. [The total number of Bitcoin nodes has dropped to a low of nearly three years]
Data calculated by Bitcoin developer "Luke Jr" shows that on May 6, the total number of Bitcoin nodes fell below 47,000, the lowest level in nearly three years.
2. [People.cn: People's Financial Services uses "supply chain + blockchain" to connect SMEs and small and medium-sized banks]
People.cn today published the article "People's Financial Services uses "supply chain + blockchain" to connect SMEs and small and medium-sized banks". It is mentioned in the article that the People's Pratt & Whitney Financial Services Platform uses blockchain technology to link core enterprise suppliers. After the core enterprise accesses the platform, its upstream and downstream small and medium-sized enterprises can rely on the real trade credentials with the core enterprise to directly initiate financing needs. After the big data risk control screening process of the platform, small and medium-sized banks can safely distribute inclusive funds to small, medium and micro enterprises through the platform. Relying on "supply Chain + blockchain", People's Financial Services has also launched a government supply chain scene service, matching local governments, park operators, park enterprises and capitals, providing the government with one-stop services such as offline merchants, standardized management, unified application of industry subsidies and supply chain funds to reduce the risk of corporate tax arrears and alleviate the loss of local fiscal revenue.
3. [The new California bill assumes that digital assets are not securities]
Under a new bill introduced in the California legislature on May 5 to amend California’s securities laws, California may be providing cryptocurrency owners with new clarity to update the definition of what constitutes a security including eligible digital assets that is not a investment contracts.
[Today's market analysis]
Bitcoin (BTC)
In the early hours of this morning, BTC first maintained a sideways consolidation, which rose slightly at about 6 o'clock, reaching a maximum of 9392.55 USDT, which is currently above 9300 USDT. Except for BTC, the remaining mainstream currencies are adjusted within the day. BTC is currently reported at 9323.5 USDT on LOEx, a rise of 0.56% in 24h.

BTC broke through the pressure level and fell back once again. Recently, it has been in a wide range of shocks around 9457-8385 in the short term. Of course, regardless of whether BTC is short-term or whether it will peak in the next week, we must prepare for withdrawal. Because, the official halving of BTC is close to "good realization is bad". Because, in the future, the market may face a slump of more than a month!
It is still 6 days before the halving of the Bitcoin block on May 12th. The first half of the rise due to the halving of Bitcoin is likely to have passed. Bitcoin is likely to start falling. This is what happened in the previous two BTC block halvings. Although history will not repeat itself, it will not be much different.
The halving of BTC block is a thing that many people are staring at, and it is also a thing that many people are laying out. The bears have been prepared in advance, and it is likely that a round of smashing will occur immediately. It isn’t know how much the price of BTC will be after this halving, hoping it is not too low.
However, although BTC will have a round of plunge after halving, it is likely that a new round of bull market will start after the plunge, the slow bull market will start, and there will always be a big market that will rise in 2021 or 2022. If we follow a four-year cycle, it is likely that there will be a big bull market for Bitcoin in 2021, which is also the time when many bigwigs predict.
Operation suggestions:
Support level: the first support level is 8800 points, the second support level is 8500 integers;
Resistance level: the first resistance level is 9450 points, the second resistance level is 9550 points.

Technical: The `SIGHASH_NOINPUT` Debate! Chaperones and output tagging and signature replay oh my!

Bitcoin price isn't moving oh no!!! You know WHAT ELSE isn't moving?? SIGHASH_NOINPUT that's what!!!
Now as you should already know, Decker-Russell-Osuntokun ("eltoo") just ain't possible without SIGHASH_NOINPUT of some kind or other. And Decker-Russell-Osuntokun removes the toxic waste problem (i.e. old backups of your Poon-Dryja LN channels are actively dangerous and could lose your funds if you recover from them, or worse, your most hated enemy could acquire copies of your old state and make you lose funds). Decker-Russell-Osuntokun also allows multiparticipant offchain cryptocurrency update systems, without the drawback of a large unilateral close timeout that Decker-Wattenhofer does, making this construction better for use at the channel factory layer.
Now cdecker already wrote a some code implementing SIGHASH_NOINPUT before, which would make it work in current pre-SegWit P2PKH, P2SH, as well as SegWit v0 P2WPKH and P2WSH. He also made and published BIP 118.
But as is usual for Bitcoin Core development, this triggered debate, and thus many counterproposals were made and so on. Suffice it to say that the simple BIP 118 looks like it won't be coming into Bitcoin Core anytime soon (or possibly at all).
First things first: This link contains all that you need to know, but hey, maybe you'll find my take more amusing.
So let's start with the main issue.

Signature Replay Attack

The above is the Signature Replay Attack, and the reason why SIGHASH_NOINPUT has triggered debate as to whether it is safe at all and whether we can add enough stuff to it to ever make it safe.
Now of course you could point to SIGHASH_NONE which is even worse because all it does is say "I am authorizing the spend of this particular coin of this particular value protected by my key" without any further restrictions like which outputs it goes to. But then SIGHASH_NONE is intended to be used to sacrifice your money to the miners, for example if it's a dust attack trying to get you to spend, so you broadcast a SIGHASH_NONE signature and some enterprising miner will go get a bunch of such SIGHASH_NONE signatures and gather up the dust in a transaction that pays to nobody and gets all the funds as fees. And besides; even if we already have something you could do stupid things with, it's not a justification for adding more things you could do stupid things with.
So yes, SIGHASH_NOINPUT makes Bitcoin more powerful. Now, Bitcoin is a strong believer in "Principle of Least Power". So adding more power to Bitcoin via SIGHASH_NOINPUT is a violation of Principle of Least Power, at least to those arguing to add even more limits to SIGHASH_NOINPUT.
I believe nullc is one of those who strongly urges for adding more limits to SIGHASH_NOINPUT, because it distracts him from taking pictures of his autonomous non-human neighbor, a rather handsome gray fox, but also because it could be used as the excuse for the next MtGox, where a large exchange inadvertently pays to SIGHASH_NOINPUT-using addresses and becomes liable/loses track of their funds when signature replay happens.

Output Tagging

Making SIGHASH_NOINPUT safer by not allowing normal addresses use it.
Basically, we have 32 different SegWit versions. The current SegWit addresses are v0, the next version (v1) is likely to be the Schnorr+Taproot+MAST thing.
What output tagging proposes is to limit SegWit version ranges from 0->15 in the bech32 address scheme (instead of 0->31 it currently has). Versions 16 to 31 are then not valid bech32 SegWit addresses and exchanges shouldn't pay to it.
Then, we allow the use of SIGHASH_NOINPUT only for version 16. Version 16 might very well be Schnorr+Taproot+MAST, with a side serving of SIGHASH_NOINPUT.
This is basically output tagging. SIGHASH_NOINPUT can only be used if the output is tagged (by paying to version 16 SegWit) to allow it, and addresses do not allow outputs to be tagged as such, removing the potential liability of large custodial services like exchanges.
Now, Decker-Russell-Osuntokun channels have two options:
The tradeoffs in this case are:
The latter tradeoff is probably what would be taken (because we're willing to pay for privacy) if Bitcoin Core decides in favor of tagged outputs.
Another issue here is --- oops, P2SH-Segwit wrapped addresses. P2SH can be used to wrap any SegWit payment script, including payments to any SegWit version, including v16. So now you can sneak in a SIGHASH_NOINPUT-enabled SegWit v16 inside an ordinary P2SH that wraps a SegWit payment. One easy way to close this is just to disallow P2SH-SegWit from being valid if it's spending to SegWit version >= 16.

Chaperone Signatures

Closing the Signature Replay Attack by adding a chaperone.
Now we can observe that the Signature Replay Attack is possible because only one signature is needed, and that signature allows any coin of appropriate value to be spent.
Adding a chaperone signature simply means requiring that the SCRIPT involved have at least two OP_CHECKSIG operations. If one signature is SIGHASH_NOINPUT, then at least one other signature (the chaperone) validated by the SCRIPT should be SIGHASH_ALL.
This is not so onerous for Decker-Russell-Osuntokun. Both sides can use a MuSig of their keys, to be used for the SIGHASH_NOINPUT signature (so requires both of them to agree on a particular update), then use a shared ECDH key, to be used for the SIGHASH_ALL signature (allows either of them to publish the unilateral close once the update has been agreed upon).
Of course, the simplest thing to do would be for a BOLT spec to say "just use this spec-defined private key k so we can sidestep the Chaperone Signatures thing". That removes the need to coordinate to define a shared ECDH key during channel establishment: just use the spec-indicated key, which is shared to all LN implementations.
But now look at what we've done! We've subverted the supposed solution of Chaperone Signatures, making them effectively not there, because it's just much easier for everyone to use a standard private key for the chaperone signature than to derive a separate new keypair for the Chaperone.
So chaperone signatures aren't much better than just doing SIGHASH_NOINPUT by itself, and you might as well just use SIGHASH_NOINPUT without adding chaperones.
I believe ajtowns is the primary proponent of this proposal.

Toys for the Big Boys

The Signature Replay Attack is Not A Problem (TM).
This position is most strongly held by RustyReddit I believe (he's the Rusty Russell in the Decker-Russell-Osuntokun). As I understand it, he is more willing to not see SIGHASH_NOINPUT enabled, than to have it enabled but with restrictions like Output Tagging or Chaperone Signatures.
Basically, the idea is: don't use SIGHASH_NOINPUT for normal wallets, in much the same way you don't use SIGHASH_NONE for normal wallets. If you want to do address reuse, don't use wallet software made by luke-jr that specifically screws with your ability to do address reuse.
SIGHASH_NOINPUT is a flag for use by responsible, mutually-consenting adults who want to settle down some satoshis and form a channel together. It is not something that immature youngsters should be playing around with, not until they find a channel counterparty that will treat this responsibility properly. And if those immature youngsters playing with their SIGHASH_NOINPUT flags get into trouble and, you know, lose their funds (as fooling around with SIGHASH_NOINPUT is wont to do), well, they need counseling and advice ("not your keys not your coins", "hodl", "SIGHASH_NOINPUT is not a toy, but something special, reserved for those willing to take on the responsibility of making channels according to the words of Decker-Russell-Osuntokun"...).

Conclusion

Dunno yet. It's still being debated! So yeah. SIGHASH_NOINPUT isn't moving, just like Bitcoin's price!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Charlie Lee is a scammer, a cancer to crypto and you should be aware of it.

Well, this is likely going to be down voted to oblivion, but I can't let it pass.
Charlie lee is nothing short of a bitconnect scammer.
He pretends to be a "nice guy", he uses his persona for personal gains while trying to shift focus out of him through hating over other projects and/or using infantile memes to gather attention from young audiences..
You should first start here: https://medium.com/@bitfinexed/coinbase-insider-trading-litecoin-edition-be64ead3facc
There are some pretty disturbing "coincidences" there.
Charlie not only started LTC opportunistically copying BTC and gluing together some pieces of code (that he managed to make worse than the originals - such as asic resistance), but he also have being absolutely flippant in everything he says about bitcoin.
He surfed the wave of being "silver to bitcoin's gold" since 2011. Suddenly, after managing to get listed in coinbase, he left it right after to "work on LTC" (all that time LTC had really near zero development). What was his work? To implement segwit, that was the only concrete thing that happened to LTC and it is highly debatable if that is even good. That's right, from 2011 to 2017, the only thing that happened to LTC was copying segwit from bitcoin core repo.
After he surfed the wave of "being a test bed for these awesome technologies", all of a sudden these "awesome technologies" apparently were not that awesome anymore, so he dumped all of his LTC.
Lets draw a timeline here:
2011 -- LTC is born from a major copy&paste event: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=47417.0 (notice that he edited the OP up to june 2014 to make it look better - hover over the date)
Up to 2017 nothing really happens, except mining. LTC is silver to BTC's gold, and LTC will succeed iff BTC succeeds. That's the narrative.
April, 2017, charlie lee leaves coinbase after he manages to list LTC there. LTC was DEAD and suddenly spikes violently in price right before listing is confirmed.
Until august, charlie lee only shills about LTC, segwit, LN and blockstream related things, posting infantile animes and cartoons. Goes to a TV show and says that LTC is like a token, for fun, embarrass himself. LTC community gets pissed and he replies to them saying that it is not his responsibility to pump their holdings.
Surprise! After 1st of august, he starts to slander BCH, call it a scam, getting pretty vocal and tweeting more shit than anyone can possibly tolerate and says that "he is done tweeting". Then he deletes several of his tweets. But comes back a couple of days after this bluff. A guy who doesn't stick to anything he says, never.
Suddenly his tweets are talking down BTC now, and shilling LTC alone, contradicting what he said to his followers in reddit, that he wouldn't shill LTC - remember: for over 5 years all he did was cheer-leading BTC and say "hey I'm the same but I'm the silver version". He continues to badmouth BCH without nothing to back it up. Even luke-jr, BTC core dev, gets pissed with him and calls his shitcoin out (https://twitter.com/LukeDashjstatus/923414550157938688), saying that he would rather use BCH (https://twitter.com/LukeDashjstatus/923435699084431360).
Charlie was often posting pictures of him with "HODL" shirts and etc. There is scant content to be found besides memes and other crap like that. Clear shilling.
December 2017, charlie lee dumps ALL his LTC he accumulated over 6 years of mining at the top of the hype (http://archive.is/l6Z6u). Not a part, but all, without further notice. I mean, there is nothing wrong in trading, but if you are a public figure and founder of the project, you gotta observe at least some responsibilities from a moral stand point.
The LEADER of a project and public figure can't simply dump everything after shilling it to hundreds of thousands of suckers, this is criminal level.
He then poses as a "nice guy", saying it was because of "conflict of interests" (supposedly the interest of getting rich after the pump and the interest of keeping hold of a future-less shitcoin.)
He also says he was so good that he donated part to LTC foundation, he is such a boy-scout! It turns out that he "donated" money to himself, since he controls the foundation, and DIRECTLY to his pals over there (confirmed by one of them). This much is of course for money launder (not defending taxes, but just stating the obvious.)
You think that bitconnect is a scam because it promised high returns and then bitconnecters sold on their supporters their bitconnect tokens. Also because of that carlos mattos ridiculous videos.
Fair enough, but charlie lee also conned people into buying LTC. His tweets are maybe not so obviously ridiculous like carlos mattos, but they are pure shill. His tweets display him with HODL messages, moon memes and other shill stuff. He then sells without telling anyone and invents some gullible crap to divert attention, also using FUD against BCH and other crypto to divert attention.
Who bought LTC? Charlie Lee followers in tweeter, his own community, and his reddit subscribers!! The listing of it in coinbase and other places, where he had obvious influence, was the pump he needed to eventually get rid of his coins. I know 8 months seem like a long time in crypto, but for a waiting of 6 years, it is really a very short time.
Now, the shameless lee is shilling Raiblocks/Nano. Let me be clear, I have technical criticism over Nano (for instance, laid down some here ), but I do not think the project launched as a scam, not really. I just think it doesn't work for the reasons pointed in the link above.
But you should be aware that now charlie is involved and using his social farms to down vote, censor and shill. He admitted having nano:
Charlie Lee: "Disclaimer: I own some NANO": >https://web.archive.org/web/20180301053624/https://twitter.com/SatoshiLite/status/968931625001140224
Now, let's be reasonable: isn't it very strange that this guy sold all coins of his own project, then when he thinks people already forgot he goes to a totally unrelated and (in principle) rival project to talk about it? And that, only after he got zillions of votes, reddit gold and visualizations, he says "hey, I have some nano, just saying".
WTF?! Does this seems like a healthy market to any of you? Do we really need this low level of manipulation to make money trading? I don't think so, we should call out the shit and we depend on good projects succeeding to go to the next level of adoption.
So I'm doing my part: be aware of the scam and trade carefully.
Shill Nano thread from Charlie archived.

I am the BearWhale: UASF Now!

A signed version of this message can be found here https://pastebin.com/Lp5Djs5R
Hello. I am the BearWhale. After a series of bad experiences with the banking system, I invested most of my life savings into bitcoin when the price was fairly low, around $8. For years I was a HODLer. I was holding when Trendon Shavers ripped everyone off. I was holding when the price was over a thousand, and I held after MtGox imploded. I believe strongly in Bitcoin’s decentralized promise of displacing immoral national currencies.
The price kept drifting downwards until finally at a little over $300 I had enough. I sold off everything, based on an accumulation of information I gathered mostly from social media such as bitcointalk.org and reddit:
At this point I should state that I am a highly technical person. I understand all of the math behind the bitcoin whitepaper and the software that powers it. Although, I am not a security expert nor am I a cypherpunk - only a little experience in the type of adversarial thinking necessary to be a competent steward of the technology. I don’t regret selling, as I made an enormous profit. The decision was a rational one based on available information. However, in 2017 I went all-in on bitcoin again and here’s why:
None of the supposed facts which motivated my decision to sell were correct. It was all a carefully crafted and funded disinformation campaign launched by Roger Ver and his cronies, perhaps Jihan Wu, to discourage improvements to the bitcoin protocol to achieve financial gain at the expense of the community.
Once I recognized the moves to discredit the core developers for what it was, a covertly operated smear campaign fought on social media, funded by enormous enrichment from bitcoin, carried out with sock puppets and appeals to emotion, I looked at bitcoin and the greater community again with a more critical eye and I came to the following conclusions:
Although I am of course an adult fully responsible for my decisions, I want to make it clear that Roger Ver’s agenda was successful at convincing me that bitcoin had a “governance crisis” and was at risk of being overtaken by altcoins.
My reason for this open letter s simple: I want the community to know that I fully support the core developers. I am strongly in favor of UASF as a mechanism for liminating the centralizing effect of miner control illusions. I support SegWit as a sensible technology for moving Bitcoin forward. I reject a block-size increase hard fork at the present time. I reject a phony “compromise.” And I especially resent and reject a consortium of suits coming to an “agreement” on what source-code base will be named “bitcoin” without that code base being thoroughly vetted over a suitable long time-frame by industry professionals. Those industry professionals include Gregory Maxwell and most of the people who participate regularly on the bitcoin developers mailing list and contribute pull requests to the bitcoin-core repository.
tl;dr; I am the BearWhale: I sold Bitcoin for the wrong reasons, and now I am all-in and long bitcoin again.

Long live decentralized bitcoin(!) A reading list

Newbs might not know this, but bitcoin recently came out of an intense internal drama. Between July 2015 and August 2017 bitcoin was attacked by external forces who were hoping to destroy the very properties that made bitcoin valuable in the first place. This culminated in the creation of segwit and the UASF (user activated soft fork) movement. The UASF was successful, segwit was added to bitcoin and with that the anti-decentralization side left bitcoin altogether and created their own altcoin called bcash. Bitcoin's price was $2500, soon after segwit was activated the price doubled to $5000 and continued rising until a top of $20000 before correcting to where we are today.
During this drama, I took time away from writing open source code to help educate and argue on reddit, twitter and other social media. I came up with a reading list for quickly copypasting things. It may be interesting today for newbs or anyone who wants a history lesson on what exactly happened during those two years when bitcoin's very existence as a decentralized low-trust currency was questioned. Now the fight has essentially been won, I try not to comment on reddit that much anymore. There's nothing left to do except wait for Lightning and similar tech to become mature (or better yet, help code it and test it)
In this thread you can learn about block sizes, latency, decentralization, segwit, ASICBOOST, lightning network and all the other issues that were debated endlessly for over two years. So when someone tries to get you to invest in bcash, remind them of the time they supported Bitcoin Unlimited.

He has made over 200 contributions to Bitcoin Core, and maintains the Bitcoin Improvement Proposals section on GitHub.. Bitcoin Core. Dashjr has been contributing to Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin since 2011. Bitcoin Core developer Luke-jr has delivered an April Fools Day joke for Bitcoin users, lobbying for a market-wide minimum Bitcoin price of $50,000. As a third option, proposed by Luke-jr, Bitcoin users could limit the size of blocks by making their transactions artificially “heavy.” Under Bitcoin’s protocol rules, these transactions would be counted as if they were larger than they actually are, which means blocks would fill up faster with less actual transaction data.
